Human civilization creates complex systems such as governments and enterprises with many organizational and social activities. Industrial Engineering is a science and engineering discipline applied to designing effective complex systems and procedures, using principles of systems engineering, operations research, information technology, physical and engineering sciences, and management and behavioral sciences. An industrial engineer is capable of examining a complex system and optimizing its performance, and analyzing and designing manufacturing and service systems for the efficient production and distribution of goods and services.
The department began with the Industrial Engineering Master’s Program in 1993, and then in 1997 added a Bachelor’s Program. In October, 2001, the Department of Industrial Engineering was established with over twenty faculty members. The founding chaired professor and department head is Dr. Gavriel Salvendy, who is a Professor in School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, and who is the first Human Factors and Ergonomics expert ever elected to the USA National Academy of Engineering. The Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University has built up international undergraduate and graduate programs, collaborating with the School of Industrial Engineering of Purdue University on teaching and research.
